Michael Chandler Speaks On Being UFC 254 Backup Plan
Michael Chandler has weighed in on being on standby for the UFC 254 main event.
Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje are scheduled to collide in the UFC 254 headliner. It’ll be a lightweight title unification bout as Nurmagomedov is the UFC Lightweight Champion, while Gaethje holds the interim gold. Chandler is the backup plan in case Nurmagomedov or Gaethje are removed from the card at the last minute.
Chandler had an interview with TMZ Sports ahead of UFC 254. He discussed being a backup plan without knowing whether or not he will actually fight this Saturday, October 24 (via BJPenn.com).
“At this point, I still don’t know if I’m weighing in and then waiting for Khabib and Gaethje to make weight and I’m good, or if the next morning I gotta still train and warm-up as though I’m going to show up to the arena and fight on Saturday night. I don’t know if I’m going to the arena, warm-up, and get my hands wrapped until Khabib and Gaethje actually step into that cage and that cage door locks and Bruce Buffer’s announcing them. I don’t know. So at this point, I’m just focused on fight week. The UFC will let me know pretty darn soon. At the end of the day, it’s none of my business. I signed the dotted one saying I would be the alternate. I am the alternate until I am needed no more.”
Chandler signed with the UFC after testing free agency. He is coming off a first-round knockout win over Benson Henderson in their rematch. Chandler is a former three-time Bellator Lightweight Champion. UFC President Dana White has said that he was sold on Chandler after just one phone call.
