The UFC Fight Island 8 main event between Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny has concluded.
Chiesa and Magny shared the Octagon on Wednesday, January 20. The two welterweights did battle inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Both men were riding three-fight winning streaks going into their 170-pound tilt.
Chiesa’s plan was to utilize his grappling skills. He got Magny down in the opening frame and he went for a kimura. Magny was able to avoid it.
In the second stanza, Chiesa scored another takedown. Magny went for the triangle choke as a way to escape. Magny returned to his feet and went for a takedown of his own, but Chiesa brought him back down and landed an elbow to the head. Chiesa ended the round in top control.
Magny was able to get Chiesa down in round three and went for back control. Chiesa returned to his feet and broke away from the clinch. Chiesa landed a left hand upstairs and grappled Magny against the fence. Magny reversed position and the two scrambled on the ground. Chiesa ended up in mount but had to settle for half guard, which he stood in for the remainder of the round.
Magny found himself on his back once again early in the fourth round. Magny tried getting back up to his feet but Chiesa grabbed a hold of his back and went for the rear-naked choke. Chiesa ended up in mount but Magny scrambled out. Magny was in a reverse triangle position but Chiesa escaped and returned to top control to end round four.
Things moved slowly early in the final frame. Eventually, Magny moved forward with punches but Chiesa ducked under and pushed him against the cage. Magny went to bring Chiesa down but “The Maverick” once again ended up on top. Chiesa stood in top control until the final horn sounded.
All three judges scored the fight for Chiesa.
