Phil Brooks has been using the name CM Punk for nearly 20 years, first as a professional wrestler and now as a MMA fighter/ media personality.
Punk, who kept the name through his tenure with the WWE, which up until recently was a rarity, preferred to go by that name than his given name. Not only does he do it for branding purposes, but admitted he only feels comfortable with those closest to him using his given name.
Mike Jackson is not one of those people, and honestly does not care.
The two men are set to face one another at UFC 225 on June 9th in Chicago, and Jackson decided to channel Coming To America, as to why he won’t be calling CM Punk by his preferred name.
“His mama call him Phil, I’m gonna call him Phil,” Jackson told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.
“That’s his name — Phil Brooks,” Jackson said. “The whole CM Punk thing, I guess he’s trying to bring that gimmick over from the professional wrestling. Look, the CM Punk guy, he’s dying June 9 at UFC 225 in his hometown of Chicago.”
“I’m expecting a sort of hostile crowd,” Jackson said. “But again, those people aren’t gonna be in the cage with Phil. They can boo me all they want to. Actually, I enjoy the boos.”
Both men are looking for their first win inside the Octagon on June 9th, but Jackson is also looking at something Punk already has… A brand.
“The main objective here is to build the Mike ‘The Truth’ entertainment brand,” Jackson said. “That’s what we’re here about. So, although I know I’m gonna be walking out to a lot of boos, eventually I want to turn those fans over and bring them to ‘The Truth’ side.”
