Mike Tyson Smoked Marijuana Just Before Roy Jones Jr. Bout
Mike Tyson says he smoked pot ahead of his exhibition match with Roy Jones Jr.
Tyson and Jones clashed in the main event of a card promoted by Triller. The action took place inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. A winner wasn’t determined even through the unofficial WBC score totals. The general consensus is that Tyson deserved the nod but both men held up for their ages.
After the fight, Tyson spoke to reporters during the post-fight press conference. “Iron” Mike admitted he used marijuana just before heading out to fight Jones (h/t USA TODAY).
“Absolutely, yes.”
Tyson went on to say that smoking is just a part of who he is.
“Listen, I can’t stop smoking,” he said. “I smoked during fights. I just have to smoke, I’m sorry. I’m a smoker. … I smoke every day. I never stopped smoking. It’s just who I am. It has no effect on me from a negative standpoint. It’s just what I do and how I am and how I’m going to die. There’s no explanation. There’s no beginning, there’s no end.”
When asked if marijuana assisted in taking more punishment during the fight, Tyson’s answer was short and sweet.
“No, it just numbs me. It doesn’t numb the pain”
Tyson’s exhibition match with Jones marked the first time he stepped inside the boxing ring since 2006 when he took on Corey Sanders. That was also an exhibition match with no winner determined. Jones hadn’t been inside the ring since 2018 when he won the WBU Cruiserweight Title.
