Mikey Garcia Signs For Next Fight
With a fight against Errol Spence Jr. put on the backburner until 2019, Mikey Garcia has signed for at least one more defense of his IBF lightweight title.
As told to Boxing Scene’s Keith Idec by Lou DiBella, Garcia will face off against mandatory challenger Richard Commey at a date to be determined for the IBF crown. DiBella, who represents Commey and Garcia’s team came to an agreement on Monday night, one day prior to a IBF purse bid.
Garcia and Commey have not been slated to a network as of yet, but FOX and Showtime may be in-line for it through their deal with Garcia’s adviser Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.
The California born Garcia was hoping to move up to two weight classes for a Pay-Per-View fight against Spence in December, but due to Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder’s December 1st showdown at Staples Center, Showtime, who would distribute the event, decided to move that fight to 2019.
This is Commey’s second attempt at the IBF lightweight title, losing to former champion Robert Easter Jr. in a close decision in 2016.
Garcia would defeat Easter for the title in July of this year, adding to his WBC lightweight championship.
