Mikey Garcia Wants Title Shot After Sandor Martin

Mikey Garcia will make his way to the ring this Saturday against Sandor Martin after a 20-month layoff.

Garcia is confident that he can pull off a win against Martin in a dominant fashion. He also expressed his desire to fight for a title after the Saturday encounter against Martin.

“I was interested in Manny and Regis, but we weren’t able to get those fights, and we landed on Sandor Martin, and he is a very good fighter,” Garcia said. “…He’s hungry for a big opportunity like this and wants to capitalize on it.”

“Sandor knows a win on Saturday would catapult his name into the mix for the fights that I want,” he added.

“I don’t think it’s going to be an easy night at all, but I am planning on fighting the very best, Sandor Martin, and I will show all my skills and show that I am a force to be reckoned with.”

The former four-division champion last fought in the ring back in February 2020 where he won a comprehensive unanimous decision victory over Jessie Vargas.

During this time, Garcia was linked with a fight against Manny Pacquiao, but the Pacman chose to fight Errol Spence Jr. Eventually, Pacquiao went on to fight Yordenis Ugas after Spence was ruled out of the fight due to an eye injury.

There was also news of Garcia fighting former 140lb champion Regis Prograis, but that fight never materialized.

But Garcia has a tough task at his hands facing Martin who is undefeated in his last nine fights. He understands he needs an emphatic victory against the Spaniard to regain his lost status among his peers.

“It’s been a year and a half since my last fight, so I am excited to get back in there,” Garcia said in an interview. “I am looking forward to giving my fans a chance to see me again, especially here in Cali, it’s my home state, but I haven’t fought much here.”

Unlike Garcia, Martin has fought a couple of times during Garcia’s dormant period. His recent victory came against Kaye Prospere where he successfully defended his European super-lightweight title in his hometown Barcelona in April.

A win against the former champion will be the biggest win of his career.
