Miocic vs. Cormier at UFC 226; Will Coach TUF 27

Despite previous denials that he will be moving back up to heavyweight, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier will now attempt to make UFC history by becoming the second UFC fighter to hold championships in two weight classes simultaneously.

Cormier will challenge UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 226 this coming July. In addition, the two will serve as the coaches for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. This will be the first time in show history that two current champions, in two different weight classes, will serve as head coaches.

If Cormier wins, he will also become the fifth UFC fighter to hold any two weight division UFC titles. Cormier reacted to the news via Twitter.

Last week at UFC 220, Miocic defeated Francis Ngannou to retain the heavyweight title via unanimous decision, becoming the first UFC heavyweight to retain the title three straight times. In addition, Cormier retained his light heavyweight title, stopping Volkan Oezdemir in the second round.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reports there is also a chance UFC 226 could feature three champion vs. champion fights. The UFC is reportedly considering booking flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson vs. bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg vs. women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes for the pay-per-view event.

UFC 226 takes place on July 7 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, one day following the finale of The Ultimate Fighter.
