Mir-Nelson 2 Headlines Bellator 231
Just like it did in February, Bellator will once again be hosting back-to-back cards at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, this October.
One night before Rory MacDonald and Douglas Lima conclude the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix at Bellator 232, a heavyweight rematch between UFC veterans Frank Mir and Roy “Big Country” Nelson will top Bellator 231 on October 25.
The pair originally faced off at UFC 130 in May 2011, with Mir sweeping the judges’ scorecards in a unanimous decision. Both men, coming into the rematch on losing streaks, will be desperate to get back in the win column.
While serving an 18-month suspension for failing a 2016 drug test, Mir, a former UFC heavyweight champion and legend, was granted his release from the promotion. Mir signed with Bellator in August 2017, but things have not gone his way.
Mir, currently on a four-fight losing skid, made his Bellator debut in the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix, getting finished by Fedor Emelianenko in just 48 seconds at Bellator 198. About eight months letter, Mir gassed out against Javy Ayala and was forced to submit to punches in the second round.
Nelson, who also signed with Bellator in 2017, is 1-3 in the promotion, losing his last three. After a successful debut win against Ayala, Nelson lost his first-round Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix fight to Matt Mitrione at Bellator 194. Nelson was then knocked out by Sergei Kharitonov at Bellator 207 before dropping a decision to Mirko Cro Cop at Bellator 216 in what would be Cro Cop’s retirement fight.
The back-to-back Connecticut cards featuring Mir-Nelson 2 and MacDonald-Lima 2 are expected to be announced tonight at Bellator 225, which also takes place in Connecticut.
