MMA Community Reacts To Jon Jones’ DWI
Earlier today, Jon Jones was arrested for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a weapon and possession of an open container. This comes after Jones sent a message of hope for those to stay inside.
The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion has bond arraignment court date set for April 9. This is not the first time Jones has had run-ins with the law, and those within the world of MMA know this. It has become common practice for the combat sports world to discuss his latest controversy, no matter the circumstances.
Fighters, journalists and trainers have sent out messages regarding this news. Some were encouraging (Jared Gordon, Sean O’Connell), while others (Dillon Danis, Colby Covington) were just putting more wood into the fire.
Check out some of the tweets below:
"Sobering truth is, his history dictates and determines that the same thing is going to happen. That is him at his core… He will not change. He's the same guy. He's rotten at his core and he will continue to f*** up." – Daniel Cormier on Jon Jones in 2016 prior to UFC 200. pic.twitter.com/XJtWVD9pjh

Obviously as a recovery/addiction advocate I sympathize with Jon here, but at the same time at one point or another its black and white… either learn from your mistakes and set a good example, especially with the size of the platform he has, or fuck it all up… https://t.co/nP9tHg5yCS

This is the most talented fighter in the history of MMA. Imagine if other sports had to deal with their GOAT being such a mess. It's drives me nuts. https://t.co/rbftyvxHxu

How can one be so great yet be so self destructive?
This unfortunately is Jon Jones’ legacy. https://t.co/ClRiaBQA4c

Per this report, after his arrest, Jon Jones was found to have a bottle of Recuerdo (Jorge Masvidal's mezcal) behind the passenger's seat of his car.
This is another troubling chapter in Jones's life and career and I hope that he is able to receive the help that he needs. https://t.co/wcItFLhOS0

You could kind of feel this Jones thing brewing on his social media. He was clearly feeling super stir crazy. A lot of fighters are not people who can easily be contained in a quarantine kind of environment.

For the life of me I can’t figure out why he doesn’t hire a buddy and pay him $50k a year to be his driver https://t.co/VcTyztKiVG

This moment came to mind today. March 2016, the last thing the judge told Jon Jones when he left court that day in Albuquerque, after taking a plea deal on multiple charges. pic.twitter.com/dDxvEWGuuk

"I really hope Jon Jones uses this … "
He won't.
"I really hope he learns …"
He hasn't.
"Well, at least the UFC will …"
Nope.
