Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is looking to get out of a losing skid.
The 40-year-old will be back in the octagon at UFC 283 for the promotion’s first event of the year at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on January 23. He will take on rising prospect Ihor Potieria.
Rua hasn’t won since 2020 when he fought to a split decision victory against Rogerio Nogueira. After that, he suffered back-to-back losses against Paul Craig and Ovince Saint Preux by KO/TKO and split decision, respectively.
He debuted in the UFC in 2007 after a decorated run in Pride FC. He won the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix where he defeated fighters like Ricardo Arona and Alistair Overeem.
Rua won the UFC light heavyweight title over Lyoto Machida at UFC 113, but then lost it to the youngest UFC champion in history – Jon Jones.
As for 26-year-old Potieria, he looks to avenge his first pro career loss, which he suffered in July to Nicolae Negumereanu, spoiling his promotion debut.
Potieria joined the UFC after becoming a top prospect in Dana White’s Contender Series.
