Modaferri, Niedzwiedz Pull Off Upsets
Sure, she wasn’t competing in the main event of Invicta FC 23, held on May 20, but Roxanne Modafferi caught a lot of attention for the performance she put on at the event.
In the co-main event of the evening, Modafferi managed to get the sole non-decision finish of the show, scoring a third-round TKO victory over Sarah D’Alelio.
"Man, I’ve never felt better in my whole MMA career," Modafferi said in the post-fight interview. "It felt so amazing."
Modafferi was in trouble early on in the fight, as she was dropped by hard shots from D’Alelio. But "The Happy Warrior" managed to shift the momentum, scoring a knockdown of her own and taking the fight to the ground and dominating the rest of the first round there.
After nearly scoring a few submissions in the second round, Modafferi chose to instead attack and use ground-and-pound in the third. That worked, as elbows forced open a cut on her opponent and the referee soon stepped in. Modafferi now has won two straight and four of her last five, including this bout with D’Alelio, who owns a victory over current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.
In the main event of the evening, not to take anything away from her, promotional newcomer Agnieszka Niedwiedz improved her unbeaten streak to 10-0, as she scored a unanimous decision upset win over Vanessa Porto. Despite being more known for her stand-up and striking game, Niedwiedz seemed to take the first two rounds for impressive ground work on display. She nearly submitted Porto to a choke in the second round, but just couldn’t sink the submission in all the way.
Niedwiedz could soon challenge for the Invicta flyweight title, while Porto now needs to rebound after two straight losses.
