Modafferi-Murphy Flyweight Bout Reportedly Set For June

Two fighters who are close to earning a title shot are looking to prove who deserves it more.

According to MMA Fighting, Roxanne Modafferi is set to face off against Lauren Murphy in a featherweight bout. The fight is reportedly scheduled to take place on June 20 in a location to be determined.

Modafferi (24-16) is on a one-fight win streak, beating Maycee Barber at UFC 246 back in January. The win halted the momentum of Barber, who was looking to quickly rise to the top of the division. “The Happy Warrior” is 3-3 in her last six fights. She has fought for the UFC Flyweight Title before; losing to Nicco Montano at The Ultimate Fighter finale in 2017.

Murphy (12-4) is on a two-fight win streak. After losing to Sijara Eubanks in 2018, “Lucky” beat Mara Romero Borella via TKO in August. Her last bout was a split decision win over Andrea Lee in February at UFC 247. Murphy is 4-2 in her last six contests.

When it comes to the UFC’s flyweight standings, (#5) and Murphy (#6) are ready to prove they have what it takes to take on champion Valentina Shevchenko. Modafferi faced her sister Antonia in April 2019, beating her via split decision.

The event on June 20 was originally set for the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Canada. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, that may change. Florida has been hosting several shows recently, and Arizona is an option, according to Dana White.

Here is the rumored card for June 20:

  • Curtis Blaydes v. Alexander Volkov
  • Marc-Andre Barriault v. Oskar Piechota
  • Modafferi v. Murphy
  • Gillian Robertson v. Taila Santos
