David Morrell Jr. is willing to fight Caleb Plant if a David Benavidez fight cannot be made.
Morrell is coming off another impressive knockout after stopping Sena Agbeko. That was his ninth knockout, taking his record to 10-0. A fight with Benavidez seems some way off as the Mexican Monster targets a bout with Canelo Alvarez. A win over Alvarez makes Benavidez the best super middleweight of his era and an undisputed champion. A fight against Morrell is not a top priority. Caleb Plant could become an alternative for Morrell. The former IBF super middleweight champion is a big name. He has faced Alvarez and Benavidez, even if he came out second best.
“I love Caleb Plant. He’s a great boxer. I respect him. If it’s next with him, OK, let’s go. You know, I’m ready. I’m not scared of anybody. I’m ready. He’s a good boxer and he’s a big name, too. He’s a very good fighter. If me and him fight, it’s nice. He moves, has defense, power. He’s a good boxer. … If tomorrow or next year they offer me Plant, I don’t have a problem with that,” Morrell stated
Plant is currently eyeing a fight with Jermall Charlo. Their rivalry began after Plant hit Charlo at the Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford weigh-in for allegedly disrespecting him in front of his wife.
But since Morrell is a WBA ‘Regular’ champion, a win over the Cuban places Plant as an interim champion for Canelo, thus making it an appealing fight.
