Morrell Jr.’s Trainer Wants Canelo Alvarez Next

David Morrell Jr.’s trainer, Ronnie Shields, wants his fighter to get a shot at Canelo Alvarez

Morrell is the current WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion coming off a knockout win over Sena Agbeko. The win kept him in his mandatory position for a shot at Alvarez’s undisputed title. Morrell’s main focus has been getting a fight with David Benavidez.

The Mexican Monster is the current WBC interim super middleweight champion who stopped Demetrius Andrade to strengthen his own claim for an undisputed title shot with Canelo. With Benavidez eying Alvarez, Morrell’s camp was open to facing Canelo too. Morrell has defended his regular title twice, as Shields wanted him to face the best.

“Not just [fighting] Benavidez, what about Canelo? Canelo is there,” Shields said

Morrell is a risky fight for Canelo. He is undefeated, with a record of 10-0, with nine knockouts. He brings no world title belts, while Alvarez has alternatives outside of Morrell. Jaime Munguia and Jermall Charlo have been mentioned as opponents. Facing Morrell when Benavidez has been in a mandatory position for much longer would not go down well. A fight with Benavidez is also more lucrative, with fight dates on Cinco de Mayo weekend and Mexican Independence Day being possible. So Morrell may have to wait to get his shot.
