Munguia-Ali Reaches 779K On HBO

While Jaime Munguia didn’t get his fight against Gennady Golovkin, he not only won the WBO super welterweight crown, but also a nice rating on HBO.

Munguia, who was the original choice to replace Canelo Alvarez as Gennady Golovkin’s opponent, was rejected by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which would lead to not only a move from Vegas to Carson California, but also Vanes Martirosyan in his place.

All is not lost as in ratings released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, a peak audience of 779,000 and an average audience of 711,000 viewers watched Munguia’s fourth-round stoppage of Sadam Ali at the Turning stone casino.

After he was rejected for a title from  Golovkin, Munguia jumped at the chance to face Ali in Verona, New York. Munguia replaced Liam Smith, once Smith withdrew from his WBO-mandated super welterweight title shot, with less than two weeks until fight night.

The opener, Rey Vargas’ victory over Azat Hovhannisyan, attracted a peak audience of 740,000 and averaged 619,000 viewers.
