Murray Gets Decision Win Over Garcia

He may not have gotten the world title fight for June 23 that he wanted, but did get a fight and a victory regardless.

Murray defeated Roberto Garcia by unanimous decision (118-109, 116-111, 118-108) at the O2 Arena in London to win the WBC Silver middleweight title. The win extended Murray’s win streak to four as he is trying to make a run to fight in his fifth world title fight as a pro.

The fight was a relatively easy going one for Murray, who dominated using his jab and landing punches to the body. There was some controversy early in the fight when Garcia was deducted a point in the second round for low blows and was again deducted a point later on in the fight although the referee did not specify the reason. Murray was not able to put away Garcia, but Garcia did little to convince the judges that he was the better boxer that night.

Garcia has held the WBC Silver title since last year and has been on an undefeated streak dating back all the way to 2010. Garcia’s last loss came to former world champion Antonio Margarito.

Murray was supposed to face WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, but Saunders suffered another injury which postponed the fight. The two were originally set to fight on April 14, but Saunders injured his hand during training which pushed back the fight. Murray was temporarily out of the June 23 card, but then got back on the card when Garcia stepped in to fight Murray.
