MVP: “Bad Day at the Office”
Bellator 165 was an above average night of mixed martial arts on Saturday. Michael "Venom" Page’s performance was below average. We are used to first round stoppages when it comes to the welterweight prospect, but Saturday knocked Page’s momentum down a peg. The hot topics of Bellator 165 was the title bout between Michael Chandler and Benson Henderson which turned into a five round war for the ages. Keri Melendez, wife of UFC veteran Gilbert Melendez scored a spectacular first round KO of undefeated 2-0 Sheila Padilla. Left off that list was the sleeper of a co-main event between Venom Page and Fernando Gonzalez.
The problem with last night’s fight was that Michael Page is used to putting on a show, unorthodox movement that seems to put opponents into a trance followed by a flash KO or stoppage. What we saw was a split decision laugher with little to no action from either fighter. MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer caught up with "MVP" after the fight and Page had this to say about his performance, "Normally, I put on a show", "People have high expectations. I had a bad day at the office."
"Obviously you don’t ever want to get booed," said Page. "I’ve been booed before, but in this particular situation it was due to the performance. Usually I’m booed because I’m coming from abroad. It added to the frustration for me because I love to give a good performance. I had a bad day at the office, and I still took a win. I managed to achieve what I wanted to achieve".
When asked about a rematch that Gonzalez called for following the fight Page had this to say, "I’ll take a rematch, but I’ve got other things in mind" said Page, "He didn’t take his chance when he got it. I’m going to move onward and upward." By upward he means a fight with Douglas Lima, Page is 12-0 in his mma career but fights like his last one do not help his push for a title shot.
