‘My Contract Is Up’: Gervonta Davis Says This Is Why He’s Fighting Rolando Romero

Gervonta Davis has been taking shots at Mayweather Promotions.

Davis is set to take on Rolando Romero on May 28 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, headlining a Showtime pay-per-view event. But the 27-year-old knockout artist revealed the reason that his promoter has been pushing for the fight to happen.

“Ok @Gervontaa I’ve given you a lot of sh!t about Mayweather Promotions keeping you in house. Seems like you’re starting to see it. Don’t let them ruin what could be a fantastic career if you took some chances. You have talent. Show it.”

In a tweet that seems to be deleted, Davis wrote: “My contract is up, that’s why they want me to fight this clown so bad.”

The two were originally scheduled to fight on December 5, but Romero was dropped after being accused of sexual assault. But those charges have since been dropped.

Davis instead faced Isaac Cruz who took Tank to the distance for the first time in years. Davis won via unanimous decisions though fans thought Cruz did enough to upset the champion.

But, Romero is now back on. Romero is also promoted by Mayweather Promotions.

In November, Davis responded to claims that Mayweather Promotions was protecting him.

“They’re saying Mayweather Promotions are protecting me and not letting me fight top fighters,” Davis told The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer.

“Whoever is in the top four, I don’t know who they’re talking about. Name somebody that is fighting the top whoever. You don’t see any other top fighters fighting top guys. I don’t know when it’s going to happen. It’ll probably happen next year or the year after that. I don’t know but don’t just put everything on me and say I’m not fighting top guys.”
