Namajunas Out Of UFC 249 Fight Against Andrade

The first domino of the newly-revamped UFC 249 fell in the form of its co-main event seeing a big change. According to a report from Combate, Rose Namajunas is out of her bout against Jessica Andrade.

The reasoning for Namajunas backing out of the event is unclear. A few days ago the fight, originally scheduled to take place in Brooklyn, was announced for the April 18 card in an undisclosed location. It is rumored to be inside a Native American reservation in California called the Tachi Palace Casino due to the coronavirus. The UFC has yet to confirm that Namajunas is off the card.

“Thug Rose” (8-4) was last seen at UFC 237 in May 2019 against Andrade. The former UFC Strawweight Champion lost her title after Andrade dropped her on the back of her neck. It was revealed she had a fracture and has been out of action to heal, physically and mentally.

Following the win against Namajunas, Andrade (20-7) lost the title to Weili Zhang back in August. She has been taking precautions in the case she was needed for UFC 249.

Both Andrade (1) and Namajunas (2) are at the top of the UFC’s strawweight rankings. It is unclear if there will be a replacement opponent for Andrade to face as a result of the news. With about a week+ until the event, will anybody be close to ready if given the call?

The main event of UFC 249 will be Tony Ferguson v. Justin Gaethje for the interim UFC Lightweight Title.
