Natália Silva Becomes New UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion
In her ninth straight UFC victory, Natalia Silva has become the women’s flyweight champion after a skilled five-round performance against Wang Cong in Saturday’s main event at UFC 332.
Cong was riding the momentum of four straight wins of her own on the way into this match, but the striking prowess of Silva seemed to humble her opponent at multiple stages in this fight.
While Silva did eventually begin to slow down once the fight progressed into the championship rounds, Cong was not pressuring as much as she needed to in order to earn the decision. Or, many have also pointed to her timidity when entering the striking zone of Silva, given the powerful kicks and punches that were landing earlier in the match.
In an impressive moment following an exchange of punches from both competitors, Silva threw a lightning-fast surprise switch high kick that connected flush with Cong’s jaw just as she was exiting the reach of her opponent. The kick dropped Cong to the canvas, and while it did not finish the fight, it certainly counted toward the unanimous decision, and put on clear display the kind of skill the division is dealing with when it comes to Silva and her Taekwondo background.
