Navarrete Stops Nunez To Unify Super Featherweight Titles

Emanuel Navarrete stopped Eduardo Nunez before the start of the 11th round to unify the WBO and IBF Super Featherweight world titles.

Navarrete added the IBF title to his existing WBO belt to extend his record to 40-2-1 (33 KOs), while Nunez moved to 29-2-0 (27 KOs). Nunez initially opted to box on the back foot, using clever movement to evade Navarrete’s looping shots. However, Navarrete’s physical pressure began to tell by the middle rounds.

Nunez abandoned his lateral movement to trade in the center of the ring, targeting Navarrete’s body with punishing hooks. While Nunez found success to the body, Navarrete’s superior size and unorthodox angles began to dismantle Nunez’s defense. 

Navarrete pinned Nunez on the ropes, unloading a barrage of uppercuts that visibly shook the IBF champion. A massive right hand from Navarrete buckled Nunez’s legs, and by the end of the round, Nunez’s right eye was nearly swollen shut.

Despite the mounting punishment, Nunez refused to back down. By the 10th round, Nunez continued to fire back, but he was not producing the same volume. The end came between the 10th and 11th rounds. Following a consultation with the ringside doctor and pleas from the corner, the referee waved off the fight due to the severe swelling and damage to Nunez’s eye.
