Necessary Replacement: Who Will Jason Moloney Face On June 25 Top Rank Card?
A top fight that was booked for an ESPN show will have to be delayed until the foreseeable future. ESPN was the first to report that Oscar Negrete is out of his fight with Jason Moloney on June 25.
Due to a detached retina during training, Negrete will not be competing on the Top Rank-produced card. In his place will be Leonardo Baez. Moloney (20-1) has been waiting to fight since April 25, when his bout with Joshua Greer Jr. was postponed due to the coronavirus. He and his brother Andrew were the first fighters to enter Top Rank’s Vegas gym following the reopening of the state.
Moloney is on a three-fight win streak following his lone loss to Emmanuel Rodriguez. Fighting for the IBF Bantamweight Title in the World Boxing Super Series Bantamweight quarter-finals, Moloney lost via split decision. His last fight was a knockout-win against Dixon Flores, his third in a row, and his fifth defense of the WBA Oceania Bantamweight Title.
Baez (18-2) is on a six-fight win streak dating back to the end of 2018. The 24-year-old last fought in February, beating Moises Flores via unanimous decision. Carl Moretti, Top Rank’s VP of Boxing Operations, stated that Golden Boy’s Eric Gomez was able to land Baez following other opponents not being able to enter the country due to travel restrictions.
“Baez is a solid guy. I have no doubt it will be an entertaining fight as well,” Moretti stated. “He’s been ready.”
Top Rank returned to action last week and featured WBO Featherweight Champion Shakur Stevenson and Jessie Magdaleno.
