Nery-Rodriguez Off Wilder-Ortiz II Card
Two of the fighters competing on the undercard of Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz II has caused a couple of notable changes to the fight card.
Luis Nery missed the bantamweight limit by one pound for his fight with Emmanuel Rodriguez. The two sides were unable to come to terms on a deal, and a result, the fight, which was scheduled to open the pay-per-view portion of the card, has now been canceled.
This is not Nery’s first time missing weight. Nery missed weight for his March 2018 WBC bantamweight title rematch with Shinsuke Yamanaka, losing the title on the scale. This came after testing positive for the banned substance zilpaterol in their original August 2017 encounter. He also nearly missed weight for his July bout with Juan Carlos Payano.
As a result of the fight’s cancelation, Leduan Barthelemy vs. Eduardo Ramirez, which was originally scheduled to headline the prelims, has now been promoted to main card opener.
A planned WBA (Regular) super bantamweight title fight between Brandon Figueroa and Julio Ceja was also affected by the weigh-ins. Ceja came in four pounds heavy, making him ineligible to win the championship. If he wins, Figueroa will lose the title and it will become vacant.
