New Opponent For Regis Prograis Potentially Revealed For DAZN Fight
It has been a whirlwind few weeks for Regis Prograis, but it appears there will be a light at the end of the tunnel for him.
According to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, Prograis will face Pablo Cesar Cano in an August DAZN bout. Previously, The Athletic stated that Chris Algieri had shown interest in a bout with the former WBA Light-Welterweight Champion.
According to Coppinger, this bout would be at 140 pounds. This news comes after the drama surrounding Prograis (24-1) and Maurice Hooker.
Hooker and Prograis were originally supposed to fight one another on April 17 but the bout was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The former WBO Light-Welterweight Champion in Hooker has expressed a desire to move up to welterweight. The stresses of cutting weight, especially due to the coronavirus, became factors in the decision. Prograis (24-1) was not willing to add weight, stating that a fight between the two was signed for a specific weight. The only way he would move up, even if it was one pound, would be for more money.
Cano (33-7-1) is on a three-fight win streak. A WBC International Silver Super-Lightweight Champion, Cano last fought in November, beating Roberto Ortiz via TKO. It was the 30-year-old’s second win in a row via some form of knockout, to go with his 23. One of them earned him a win over Jorge Linares.
Prograis (24-1) is coming off of a loss to Josh Taylor back in October. The former WBA and NABF Light-Welterweight Champion was one win away from winning the World Boxing Super Series: Super-Lightweight finals.
Stay tuned, as more information is set to be revealed about Prograis’ latest opponent.
