It wasn’t originally planned this way.
Jiri Prochazka suffered an injury and had to relinquish his title even before his first defense of the belt. The injury resulted in him being sidelined from the main event and elevation of the co-main between Blachowicz and Ankalaev to the headliner of the evening.
Blachowicz lost the title to Glover Teixeira at UFC 267 in October 2021.
Blachowicz made a strong comeback by scoring a TKO win over Aleksandar Rakic in the main event of May’s UFC Vegas 54 event.
This was Blachowicz’s solo appearance in the whole year.
Ankalaev is on a roll as he heads into the fight with a nine-fight winning streak on his back.
This run includes victories over the likes of the former lightweight contenders Thiago Santos and Anthony Smith in 2022.
