Ngannou On Heavyweight Title Situation: ‘We Have To Move On’

Many see Francis Ngannou as the next big heavyweight contender in the UFC. The only issue is the holdup within the division. Just like his opponent, Ngannou has a solution for the situation surrounding the UFC Heavyweight Title.

“The Predator” believes his upcoming clash with Jairzinho Rozenstruik should be for an interim title.

The current UFC Heavyweight Champion is Stipe Miocic, who beat Daniel Cormier at UFC 241 last August to reclaim the belt. He suffered an eye injury in the fight, which has delayed the rumored trilogy bout. Believed to be ready by August, Stipe is set to face an impatient Cormier, who is set to retire after.

Ngannou’s (14-3) opponent in Rozenstruik recently stated that because of all of the waiting they should fight for an interim title. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Ngannou repeated those words in his own way.

“Regarding the situation, yes, this is what it should be and also, me and my manager, we suggested that to the UFC but they don’t sound interested about it,” Ngannou stated. “But if you look at the fact – in August, it’s gonna be one year since the last time they fight for the title in the heavyweight division.

“So far, we don’t know when’s gonna be the next fight for the title in the heavyweight division so, at some point, we have to move on. What’s gonna be next? Let’s say this fight happens on May 9, then what next? I mean what’s up for the heavyweight division? They have to put something down, basically the interim title.”

Ngannou is on a three-fight win streak. After beating Curtis Blaydes for the second time to close out 2018, he beat Cain Velasquez last February via KO and Junior dos Santos in June via TKO. Ngannou has faced Miocic before for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Back in January 2018 at UFC 220, Miocic neutralized Ngannou, retaining the title via unanimous decision.

Both Ngannou and Rozenstruik were supposed to fight at UFC Columbus, but that was postponed as a result of the coronavirus. The matchup was then moved to UFC 249 before that card ended up not coming to fruition. Now the bout is being rumored for May, in an undisclosed location. Like most, Ngannou is waiting for the UFC to make a move so the division can move forward.

“At some point we just wanna know what’s going on in the division, but it’s kinda part of my frustration now,” Ngannou went on to say. “After this fight, let’s say I go there (and) beat this guy – what next? I’m gonna sit there and wait for them or what’s next. It’s a very blind spot right now, the title in the heavyweight division, and I would like the UFC to put light and to bring some clarification about it.”
