Ngumbu Tore Calf Ligament in Loss to Gvozdyk
A torn calf ligament is the cause of Doudou Ngumbu’s bizarre mid-fight injury that forced a halt to his light heavyweight title bout with WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, giving Gvozdyk a fifth-round TKO win.
Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission executive director Greg Sirb told ESPN that Nugmbu has been flown back to France and has been placed on indefinite medical suspension “pending clearance of calf muscle and Achilles heel.”
“I’ve seen guys twist their ankles real bad, but I’ve never seen a torn ligament like that,” Sirb said. “He was in the hospital for a couple of hours, they fitted him some type of boot.”
The referee and ringside physician paused the action and ultimately deemed that Ngumbu could not continue with the bout. It was a memorable, yet weird, ending to a fight that had been uneventful up until that point. The champion was ahead on the scorecards when the fight was stopped.
“Nobody wants to see the fight end that way, but I wanted to make sure the interpreter asked [Ngumbu] point blank if he could continue,” Sirb said.
