Nonito Donaire Becomes Reymart Gaballo’s Translator At Press Conference
Boxing ace Nonito Donaire won the hearts of his fans a day before he stopped Reymart Gaballo in the fourth round to defend his WBC bantamweight title. The 39-year-old stopped Gaballo in the fourth round to continue his dream run on Saturday in Carson, California.
When asked about his thoughts on Donaire’s left hook in a pre-fight press conference, Gaballo needed someone to translate his answers to English from his native language, Tagalog. Donaire then helped his fellow Filipino before a neutral translator took over.
“He said, ‘Not just the left hook. He also has other arsenals we have to look out for as well,’” Donaire translated his opponent’s response.
When asked what a win against the champ would mean to him, Donaire again translated:
“He said, ‘It would give him great pleasure if it happens because what he has been looking for his entire life is to be announced as a world champion.”
Donaire has been a humble personality throughout his career. He avoids talking big and likes to do his talking inside the ring.
Before the fight, he felt proud that he had another fellow countryman that he had to defend his title.
“I’m happy to be sharing the ring with Reymart. I know he’s very hungry and that he has a big dream, just like everyone in the Philippines,” the champ said.
“I know that he’s going to be at his best, so I made sure that I’m prepared and at my best as well.”
