Nunez Vs. Navarrete Unification Set For March 7
A super-featherweight title unification between WBO champion Emanuel Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) and IBF champion Eduardo Nunez (29-1-0, 27 KOs) has been agreed for March 7 from the Mortgage Matchup Center, the stadium of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns.
The fight first faced complications due to the mandatory challenger Charly Suarez. Saurez’s fight with Navarrete ended in an eighth-round stoppage as Navarrete won via a technical decision. This was due to an assumed headbutt. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), however, ruled that it was a no-contest, stating that a punch, not a headbutt, caused the cut. The WBO had ordered an immediate rematch between Navarrete and Suarez. That meant Navarrete’s team had to successfully negotiate a step-aside deal with Suarez. Now, Suarez’s team appears happy with the nature of the step-aside deal, allowing the fight to happen.
