Okinoumi Continues Strong Start

Okinoumi has been the most impressive competitor at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, and continued his strong start on Wednesday. He moved to 4-0 by beating ozeki Terunofuji.

In the first four days of the meet, Okinoumi has beaten both yokozuna Harumafuji (3-1) and Kakuryu (2-2) as well as two ozeki, Kisenosato (2-2) and Terunofuji (2-2).

His win on Wednesday did inspire some debate with the judges. Some of the judges thought that the stable wrestler might have stepped out of bounds on his way to the ground with Terunofuji. Eventually he was declared the winner.

“It’s just getting started,” said Okinoumi, who will face Shohozan (2-2) on Thursday. “What’s important is how I do from here on. I’ve got to keep at it.”

Kisenosato, who entered the tournament with promise but lost back to back matches, rebounded from his second defeat on Tuesday by beating No. 1 Yoshikaze (1-3).
