Oleksandr Usyk ‘In Negotiations’ To Fight Tyson Fury After Anthony Joshua Bout Falls Through
With Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua out of the way, it reopens the path to the undisputed heavyweight title fight.
WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk said he is still open to face Fury next year. For him, that’s the only fight that he wants.
“I don’t know anything about what Tyson Fury is doing or thinking. We’re in negotiations talking about a match and we’re doing our best to make this bout happen,” Usyk told Parimatch.
“Of course, I really want to have this fight next year.
“But, if Tyson Fury is not interested in a match next year, then it’s not possible to fight against him. I’m not interested in fighting any other boxer, so let’s wait.”
Usyk is just coming off a split decision victory against former unified champion Anthony Joshua – his second time pulling off the upset against the British boxer.
In their first bout, the boxing world was shocked to see the not-yet-known Ukrainian boxer outwork Joshua to a unanimous decision victory.
As for Fury, he remains undefeated in all of his 32 fights – with one draw to Deontay Wilder. He last defeated Dillian Whyte in April.
After Usyk’s win over Joshua for the second time in August, Fury posted a video on social media that said he would destroy Usyk and Joshua.
But, weeks later, it was revealed that Fury was pursuing an all-British clash with Joshua. Earlier this month, Fury’s co-promoter, Frank Warren, said that a contract was on its way to Joshua. But, according to Fury, that is now off since Joshua did not sign it on time.
Now, Fury has returned to a possible matchup with Usyk, but in August, the “Gypsy King” said that the only way that would happen is if he was paid $500 million.
“He’s talking about 500 million pounds for the fight. He’s a lunatic, but in a good sense I mean,” Usyk added.
“I’d also want 500 million, but it’s something crazy.”
Fury has also mentioned potentially facing WBC No. 19-ranked Mahmoud Charr.
