Oleksandr Usyk Would Go Back To Cruiserweight To Fight Canelo Alvarez
Oleksandr Usyk wouldn’t mind facing Canelo Alvarez.
Usyk said that he would go back down to cruiserweight to face the current undisputed world champion, but on one condition.
“Canelo is a handsome man. If he wants to box with me at cruiserweight, then I can go down there. But on condition that I still have my heavyweight belts because I’ll go back there later,” Usyk told Fighthype.
Alvarez is currently preparing to face WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu who has an upcoming mandatory defense.
Alvarez is coming off a dominant 11th round knockout over Caleb Plant, claiming his opponent’s belt to become the first ever undisputed super middleweight king.
To face Makabu, Alvarez must bulk up two weight classes. Meanwhile Usyk – the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight champion – would have to go down one weight class.
Usyk became the four-belt champion after a major upset victory over Anthony Joshua in September. The two will meet again in a contracted rematch in the first quarter of 2022.
Fans have criticized Alvarez for “cherry picking” his opponents, including Makabu, who they say is the weakest of the cruiserweight champions.
Critics say Alvarez would earn more respect if he snagged a victory versus Usyk, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion.
