Alex Oliveira suffered an unusual and potentially dangerous injury.
Per a report from MMA Fighting, Oliveira was injured in Brazil due to a grenade exploding near him while he was in the country. According to the report, Oliveira went to buy gasoline for his mother’s car on Christmas Eve when he saw members of his family involved in an altercation that involved his nephew allegedly being held up at gunpoint.
After stopping his car, a grenade was launched at his direction. The grenade exploded and fragments of the grenade went to his leg. Oliveira explained to TV Rio Sul how the situation unfolded. Oliveira went to a hospital to undergo surgery to remove the fragments from his leg and even went to police to explain how the incident occurred.
“One guy came up and pointed a gun at my nephew’s face, and that’s when people started pushing each other,” Oliveira told TV Rio Sul. “They had machetes, knives, a grenade. They threw a grenade in my direction. Fragments flew to my leg and my foot.”
The 30-year-old Oliveira last fought at UFC 231 on December 8, losing to Gunnar Nelson by submission. Oliveira, who sports a 19-6-1 (2 NC) MMA record, has won two of his last three fights.
