ONE Championship Signs Brazilian Prospect Batista
Looking to beef up its roster, ONE Championship has signed Herbert Batista to a four-fight deal. This is according to MMA Fighting. He will be competing in the lightweight division.
Batista (15-2-1) is on a ten-fight win streak that dates back to 2016. He fought three timed in 2019, his last bout a unanimous decision win over Lucio Abreu in November. By beating Abreu, Batista won the TAURA MMA Lightweight Championship.
“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Batista stated to MMA Fighting. “I came from Amazonas and earned a contract with one of the biggest promotions in the world. I worked really hard. I’m one of the bets lightweights in Brazil, and thank God, now I’m taking another big step in my career with this contract with such a renowned promotion like ONE.”
With five wins via knockout and seven via submission, “Matagal” is hooping to take over a stacked lightweight division. The current ONE Lightweight Champion is Christian Lee, who has held onto it since May 2019.
It is unknown when Batista’s first bout will be for ONE. As of now, all major events for the promotion are postponed for the next few months as a result of the coronavirus.
