Ortega-Holloway Battle For Featherweight Gold At UFC 231

Five months after they were set to face off, Brian Ortega finally gets his chance at the UFC featherweight title on Saturday night against Max Holloway.

The two headline UFC 231 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Pay-Per-View, after they were supposed to face off at UFC 226 in July.

Holloway returns to the Octagon over a year after his last defense at UFC 218 against Jose Aldo, as the Hawaiian has dealt with a litany of health issues that have cost him a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223, and the UFC 226 fight against Ortega.

Heading into the fight, Ortega, a person who Joe Rogan claims has the “smoothest” Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the UFC, was unsure that Holloway would be able to make weight for their 145-pound showdown at the Scotiabank Centre, but on Friday Holloway would come under at 144 pounds.

Ortega’s rise came due to Holloway pulling out of his UFC 222 fight against Frankie Edgar. Edgar walked into the Octagon as the favorite against Ortega, but the California native would shock many when he’d knockout Edgar in the first round.

From there Ortega would take the mandatory challenger label from Edgar and wait nine months for his chance at the featherweight crown.

With UFC President Dana White seeing Holloway’s days at featherweight numbered, a win or a loss may end the “Blessed” era at 145 pounds and see him move up to lightweight. Ortega has also eyed a move to lightweight, wanting a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Ortega and Holloway headline a card that features a fight for the vacant women’s flyweight title, as Valentina Shevchenko battles former women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
