Ortega Injured, Out Of Fight Against Korean Zombie

It will be a matchless 2019 for Brian Ortega, as he has pulled out of his bout on December 21 in Busan, South Korea due to injury. Ariel Helwani of ESPN was the first to report that Ortega (14-1, 1NC) injured himself prior to his fight against Chan Sung Jung.

Ortega ended up taking to Twitter to reveal the extent of his injuries. The 28-year-old stated he tore his ACL while training in Korea. He tried pushing through it and fighting but doctors advised him against it, stating a rupture was likely if he kept on going. Ortega is hoping to be back within the next two-three months.

Ortega is coming off of a TKO-loss to Max Holloway last December for the UFC Featherweight Championship. Since then, he has been plagued with a number of injuries that have kept him away from the octagon.

This leaves the Korean Zombie (15-5) without an opponent, with no replacement announced yet.  Jung’s last fight was in June, beating Renato Moicano via TKO. 5-2 in his last seven fights, Jung could end up facing Frankie Edgar, according to Helwani. Edgar is currently set to face Corey Sandhagen in January.
