Oscar De La Hoya ‘Can’t Wait’ For Teofimo Lopez vs. Ryan Garcia
Oscar De La Hoya hopes to put together a big lightweight title fight between Teofimo Lopez and Ryan Garcia.
Lopez holds four major world titles in the lightweight division, while Garcia will be fighting Luke Campbell for the interim WBC Title on December 5. It’s no surprise that De La Hoya is hoping to get a big fight for Garcia as “KingRy” fights under Golden Boy Promotions. Many have wondered how Garcia would fare against the likes of Lopez and Gervonta Davis.
During a live stream on his Instagram account, De La Hoya discussed the possibility of helping make Lopez vs. Garcia a reality (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“I can’t wait to do Teofimo in the future with Ryan Garcia. That’s the fight to make. It’s crazy, because everyone is after Ryan Garcia. Imagine that. But Teofimo rocks. He killed it. He’s going to be a great champion for many years to come. We can’t wait to make those big fights happen.
“You know one thing about me is that I love making all of the fights happen, and fighting the very best. I seriously feel that Ryan Garcia wants that as well. Believe me. [Luke] Campbell [on Dec.5] is a tough fight. When [Garcia] gets past Campbell, the sky’s the limit for Ryan. He’s the superstar now. He’s going to fight the very best.”
Lopez fights under Top Rank Boxing. Bob Arum has said that he’s interested in seeing Lopez vs. Garcia. If Garcia handles business against Campbell, it may not be far-fetched to see this mega title fight down the line.
Lopez is taking some time off to recover from surgery on his right foot. He will be able to start rehabbing in four to five weeks. “The Takeover” suffered ligament damage during his unanimous decision victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko back on October 17.
