Oscar De La Hoya Confirms Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia Is In The Works
Oscar De La Hoya has confirmed that Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia is being worked on.
De La Hoya has been riding high on Munguia, who he promotes under Golden Boy Promotions. Munguia has amassed a perfect pro boxing record of 36-0. He is a former WBO Light-Middleweight Champion.
Speaking to BoxingScene.com, De La Hoya said that Golovkin vs. Munguia is the fight to make next for Golovkin’s IBF and IBO Middleweight Titles.
“That’s the fight that we’re working on. That’s the fight that everyone’s interested in.”
De La Hoya went on to reveal the target date.
“Cinco de Mayo. Imagine that championship fight headlining on that weekend. It will be explosive.”
Golovkin is fresh off a record-setting title defense. He defeated Kamil Szeremeta for his 21st successful middleweight title defense, breaking Bernard Hopkins’ record.
Munguia last competed on October 30, stopping Tureano Johnson to become the WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight Champion. This was Munguia’s 29th victory by way of knockout.
Putting together Golovkin vs. Munguia isn’t expected to have major hurdles. Golovkin is promoted by Matchroom Boxing. Golden Boy and Matchroom have worked together in the past, including more recently with Ryan Garcia vs. Luke Campbell. De La Hoya and Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn have traded barbs in the past but that hasn’t stopped them from doing business together.
