Oscar Duarte Becomes The First Fighter To Stop Jojo Diaz

Oscar Duarte bounced back from his defeat to Ryan Garcia, stopping Jojo Diaz via a ninth-round TKO.

The win took Duarte’s record to 27-2-1, 22 KOs, as he fought under his new trainer Robert Garcia for the first time. The opening four rounds were competitive, with neither fighter being able to assert their dominance. Duarte’s lack of a jab allowed Diaz to counter and land on the body. However, Duarte walked down his opponent slowly as Diaz tired.

A huge right hand buzzed Diaz, who resorted to a defensive position in the fifth. That increased Duarte’s confidence as he walked forward, landing the right hand at will. Diaz was feeling the pace. A series of combinations near the ropes hurt Diaz, and the referee stopped the fight in the ninth. While Diaz protested at the stoppage, his corner threw in the towel at the same time. It was the first time Diaz had been stopped, with Duarte back to his best as the fighter credited his trainer.

“It is a big difference with Robert Garcia. It was the experience I needed. My plan was to bring the pressure,” Duarte said
