Oscar Valdez Admits He Was Upset With Miguel Berchelt Over Positive COVID-19 Test
Oscar Valdez says his initial reaction to Miguel Berchelt’s positive COVID-19 test was anger.
Valdez will be challenging Berchelt for the WBC Super-Featherweight Title this Saturday night, February 20. The two were initially set to clash on December 12. That plan went awry when Berchelt tested positive for COVID-19.
During an interview with BoxingScene.com, Valdez said he was none too pleased with Berchelt as he felt the champion wasn’t taking the right precautions.
“It was very heartbreaking at first. I was very mad at him for the simple reason of him not taking care of himself, maybe. I seen him going out to public spots, baseball games. I got a little frustrated because I take this very seriously. We’re always at the gym, sanitizing, picking and choosing our sparring partners that we know that are tested. We’re taking this very seriously because we wanna fight. This is our job. This is how we feed our families. And the fans want this fight, so I got very upset at him for getting COVID.”
Barring any last-minute mishaps, Valdez will finally get his title fight with Berchelt. The title bout will headline a card promoted by Top Rank Boxing.
Valdez comes into the fight with an undefeated pro boxing record of 28-0 with 22 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Berchelt’s record stands at 37-1, 1 NC. He has 33 knockouts to his credit.
Berchelt vs. Valdez will air live on the major ESPN network and on FIGHT SPORTS in over 30 countries. Check your local listings for availability.
