Oscar Valdez Hopes Title Fight With Miguel Berchelt Is An Instant Classic

Oscar Valdez is looking for a classic Mexican boxing match against Miguel Berchelt the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Erik Morales.

Valdez and Berchelt were both born in Mexico and their fighting spirits have had many comparing them to all-time greats such as Morales and Barrera. Valdez is hoping to not only take the WBC Super-Featherweight Title from Berchelt, but to also have a fight for the ages.

During a chat with Jose Luis Camarillo, Valdez spoke on what it would mean to him if his matchup with Berchelt went down as an instant classic (via BoxingScene.com).

“I grew up with the fights of Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

“And I already lived through the final moments of Mike Tyson. The best fought the best. Now it is known that some fighters turn away from others because of money. I don’t like that. I chose to fight Berchelt… it is the toughest, it is a very attractive fight for the public and, most importantly, to have a war and fight for the title of my dreams, the WBC.”

Valdez has had a taste of major gold in the past. He is a former WBO Featherweight Champion. Valdez vacated the gold in favor of moving up in weight. He hopes to lock down the distinction of winning a world championship in two or more divisions.

Berchelt vs. Valdez is set to take place on February 20. The event will air live on the major ESPN network and on FIGHT SPORTS in over 30 countries worldwide.
