Oscar Valdez-Shakur Stevenson Title Unification Fight In The Works

Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson could be meeting in the ring soon.

Representatives for WBC super featherweight champion Valdez and WBO super featherweight champ Stevenson confirmed that they are closing in on a deal for the two super featherweight champions to collide in a title unification fight, targeted for April 30 in Las Vegas, Boxing Scene reported.

Stevenson has publicly questioned if Valdez is avoiding him. He was the WBO’s mandatory challenger for Valdez when he held the WBO featherweight title, but Valdez vacated the belt and moved up to super featherweight.

Stevenson is coming off a dominant performance against former champion Jamel Herring. The 24-year-old’s speed and skill overwhelmed the boxing veteran. Stevenson claimed the belt by a 10th round knockout.

Stevenson was Herring’s mandatory challenger.

Valdez, meanwhile, took on fellow Mexican boxer Miguel Berchelt last February, stunning his opponent and fans with a 10th round knockout.

His next fight was in September against Robson Conceicao where it went the distance. Valdez won by unanimous decision, but many fans didn’t agree with the decision. On top of that, Valdez tested positive for Phentermine, a banned stimulant, but was allowed to still fight and defend his belt.

Neither Valdez nor Stevenson have made a comment on the report.
