Oscar Valdez To Reportedly Face Jayson Velez on July 21 Top Rank Card
Former world champion Oscar Valdez could be one step closer to facing one of the top fighters in the junior-lightweight division.
ESPN is the first to report that Valdez (27-0) will be facing off against Jayson Velez on a Top Rank-produced card on July 21. The fight is expected to take place inside the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“The fight is done, we’re excited about it, Oscar is very happy to be back doing what he loves,” Frank Espinoza, Valdez’s manager stated.
The 29-year-old Valdez, the former WBO Featherweight Champion, fought three times in 2019. He defended it six times, up until June 2019. After that, he moved up to junior-lightweight and beat Adam Lopez back in November via TKO. It was his 21st bout that ended via some form of knockout.
Velez (29-6-1) is 2-1 in his last three fights after losing to prospect Ryan Garcia in 2018. His last bout was a split decision loss against Jaime Arboleda back in February.
Valdez was rumored to be fighting in June, in an attempt to secure a bout against WBC Junior-Lightweight Champion Miguel Berchelt. Berchelt is set to face off against Eleazar Valenzuela on June 27 from inside the TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City. If both win their fights, the path to a clash could be realistic not long after.
“That’s the fight we want next, that’s the one Oscar is aiming for,” Espinoza went on to say. “We’re hoping that by the fall there can be crowds at fights, because we know how much fans are anticipating it.”
