Overeem vs. Werdum 3 In the Works

Two heavyweight legends are reportedly set for a trilogy fight during the biggest weekend of the UFC calendar year. Former champion Fabricio Werdum is in talks to take on Alistair Overeem at UFC 213 on July 8, which comes at the end of UFC International Fight Week.

The fight was first reported by MMA insider TalkMMA on Twitter and then confirmed by FloCombat.

If the fight goes down as planned, it will be the third matchup between the two heavyweights.

Werdum defeated Overeem by submission back in 2006 at Pride Total Elimination Absolute. In 2011, Overeem beat Werdum by unanimous decision at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum.

The Brazilian held the heavyweight title at this time last year, but was knocked out by Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 in Brazil. Overeem ended up being Miocic’s first title defense at UFC 203 in Cleveland, and Overeem lost by first-round knockout as well. Since their losses to Miocic, both Werdum and Overeem have bounced back; Werdum defeating Travis Browne at UFC 203, and Overeem knocking out Mark Hunt at UFC 209 in March.

The rubber match between Werdum and Overeem will have major title implications in the shallow heavyweight division.
