Goeido Retains Lead at Autumn Basho
Ozeki Goeido is still unbeaten at the Summer Autumn Basho Tournament after defeating the No. 5 maegashira Aoiyama on Monday. Goeido is now 9-0 in the Tournament.
The victory over Aoiyama did not come easy, as Goeido was the slightly shorter man and had to overcome Aoiyama’s bull-rushing strength to push his opponent out of the ring.
There is a two-way tie for second place between Yokozuna Harumafuji and 14th-ranked maegashira Endo. Top maegashira Okinoumi suffered a setback and fell to 7-2 in the Tournament.
Harumafuji now sits at 8-1 after defeating komusubi Tochiozan easily in the last match of the day. Endo had a difficult bout with Sokokurai but was ultimately able to defeat the No. 11 maegashira.
The tournament’s top spot is there for the taking for any competitor, as top yokozuna Hakuho is not competing because of injuries. He has competed at every basho since 2006.
