Pacquiao’s Political Career Continues

Manny Pacquiao’s political career continues as the president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., appointed the 8-division world champion International Boxing Hall of fame as the lead convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission.

Pacquiao’s previous political milestones include being elected to congress in 2010 and 2013 representing the province of Sarangani in the House of Representatives by landslide victories. He was also elected to the Senate in 2016 when he secured a national seat in the upper house of Congress when finishing 7th with more than 16 million votes – he served as Senator until 2022, and than ran for President of the Philippines, losing to Marcos Jr.

Pacquiao took his oath before Marcos in Malacanang on September 8. He now has the rank of Cabinet secretary.

The 47-year-old said he came from poverty, sleeping on cardboard on the streets with nothing to eat, and now he wants to do more in this new role to help poor communities. Pacquiao is expected to hold consultations throughout the Philippines to align poverty-reduction initiatives across government.

The President expressed his trust in Pacquiao’s leadership to boost the government’s anti-poverty efforts, advance social reforms, and bring programs and services closer to communities across the county. Manny thanked Marcos for his  confidence in him.
