Parker Dominates Wilder In Huge Upset

Joseph Parker secured an upset win over Deontay Wilder in a one-sided unanimous decision, dashing the hopes of an Anthony Joshua fight.

Before the fight, all eyes were on Wilder facing Joshua on the condition both men won their respective fights. Parker had other plans as he neutralized Wilder’s right hand with a meticulous game plan. The early rounds lacked much action, but Parker took control of the centre, using his lateral movement. Wilder circled on the outside, throwing his jab at a short distance.

Parker shaded the earlier rounds, connecting with his overhand right. By the end of round three, Parker had worked on the inside with his jab, as his trainer Andy Lee’s plan was clear. Jab to the body, then duck on the inside with an overhand right. By round four, Parker landed that right-hand numerous times, followed by a right hook.

By the second half of the fight, Wilder was well behind on the scorecards. The American needed more urgency. The Bronze Bomber had a better ninth, grazing Parker’s head with his right hand. Parker bounced back in the tenth, but Wilder connected with a right uppercut. With Wilder needing a knockout, the American was far from it. All the judges scored it in favor of Parker: 118-111, 118-110 and 120-107. The defeat leaves the Joshua fight in doubt after reports a two-fight deal had been agreed. Wilder’s post-fight comments suggested he may be considering retirement, while Parker was overjoyed with the performance.

“A lot of respect to Wilder, a dangerous fight, but we trained hard for this fight. A lot of people had plans, other plans, but this is God’s plan. Today I got the win, merry Christmas to us. Maybe inactivity played a big part? It’s a great finish to the year. Practice, practice practice, work work work. I had to be switched on the whole fight. He did catch me on the glove and I could feel the power, if he landed it might have been different. Tyson Fury, thanks for all your help,” Parker

“He did a good job avoiding my punches. No excuses. It wasn’t my night. A lot has calmed me down, I’ve found a lot of peace in my life, I’ve found a lot of love. Win lose or draw I’ma keep my smile on my face. If you come up short here, you keep going,” Wilder
