Patrick Teixeira Responds To Jermell Charlo
Patrick Teixeira is aware of Jermell Charlo’s recent comments and he wasn’t interested in holding his tongue.
Teixeira holds the WBO Light-Middleweight Championship. Charlo lays claim to the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBC gold. Charlo won the WBA and IBF Titles with his eighth-round knockout victory over Jeison Rosario on September 26.
With the WBO Championship being the only piece of major hardware left for Charlo to be the undisputed champion at 154 pounds, many have asked if he’ll go after Teixeira. Charlo didn’t appear to be convinced that Teixeira wants any part of him.
Teixeira caught wind of Charlo’s comments and he issued a fiery response. Here’s what the WBO Champion had to say to BoxingScene.com.
“Charlo, for you to be the best, you need to beat me. Right now, I have a mandatory fight. If the WBO authorizes it, though, I will be happy to end your career and then fight Castano next. … I will end PBC’s hold on 154. Charlo, I promise you are not Lions Only. You are nothing but a little kitten.”
There is a roadblock to making Charlo vs. Teixeira a reality. The mandatory WBO challenger is Brian Castano. The organization plans to enforce Castano’s mandatory status. WBO President Paco Valcarcel doubled down on this once he heard rumblings of Teixeira and Tim Tszyu showing mutual interest in a bout. It has since been reported that Tszyu is preparing to fight a different opponent later this year.
