PBC Fighter of the Year: Carl Frampton
Belfast’s Carl Frampton (23-0) accomplished a host of achievements in his two 2016 performances: he faced elite competition, won titles in two divisions, and emerged victorious from an instant classic Fight of the Year candidate. Frampton’s work in the ring was enough to earn him Premier Boxing Champions’ "Fighter of the Year" award.
In his first fight of 2016, Frampton defeated Scott Quigg in a 122-lb. title unification bout. The fight took place near Quigg’s hometown of Bury, Lancashire, but much of the crowd backed the Irishman. Frampton broke Quigg’s jaw and earned a split decision victory.
Frampton then moved up to the 126-lb. division and took on its best fighter, undefeated world champion Leo Santa Cruz. He entered Brooklyn, New York as a sizable underdog. Frampton and Santa Cruz engaged in one of the best fights of the year, trading momentum throughout the course of the fight. Frampton earned a rightful unanimous decision victory and a belt in a second division.
"I’m in this game to win fights and to win titles," Frampton said of the award, "but when you’re picking up awards like Fighter of the Year when there are so many good fighters around, obviously it’s a huge achievement, and I’m very, very grateful."
