PBC Pushes For Canelo vs Munguia

PBC is putting pressure on Canelo Alvarez to fight Jaime Munguia.

That is according to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez. Alvarez’s announcement on Mexican TV confirmed an American opponent for his next fight. But Jermall Charlo ruled himself out after initially stating a fight was in place. Canelo dismissed Terence Crawford, while David Benavidez’s promoter said Alvarez did not want the fight in 2024. A Munguia fight would go against Canelo’s statement since he is Mexican.

However, Canelo’s insistence on having a guarantee has presented an obstacle. A Munguia fight would sell on Cinco De Mayo, as it’s against an unbeaten Mexican fighter, even if Benavidez is the option boxing fans want.

Munguia fights on DAZN, meaning a co-promotional bout could be on offer. Canelo fought on DAZN before signing a three-fight deal with PBC. PBC’s deal with Amazon Prime Video did not include fixed purses for fighters. That could damage PBC’s stability long-term, with fighters leaving, while the big stars demand huge purses.

If the Munguia fight fails, Canelo may explore other options. Chris Eubank Jr. has an outside chance of getting the fight. The boxer has fought under PBC, making it possible to do a deal. Eubank’s father, Chris Eubank Sr., has called on his son to take up the challenge.

“Real fighters, real boxing people. I know how you win respect, it’s not beating a Liam Smith. Junior, this is what my view is – your saving grace is going to be Canelo,” Chris Eubank Sr. said
